City of Phoenix Proposed Budget Available for Community Review

The city of Phoenix is in the process of adjusting the 2009-10 budget and preparing the 2010 – 11 budget, which will include new reductions to city programs and services.  The total combined deficit is $241.4 million.

This is the third year of budget reductions in the city.  The Parks and Recreation Department, along with the other city departments, has had to identify many painful spending reduction options.  Information on all of the proposed reductions to city services can be found at:  http://phoenix.gov/BUDGET/index.html

Once there, select the link ‘Schedule 1: Proposed General Fund Budget Reductions by Department” to find information specific to the proposed reductions to the Citywide Softball Program and Softball Complexes.  The proposals include:

  1. Evening closure of Desert West Softball Complex - page 43 (#12).
  2. Elimination of the Citywide Softball leagues - page 45 (#16).
  3. Closure of the three Softball Complexes - page 51 (#25).

Beginning Wednesday, February 10th and continuing through Wednesday, February 24th the City Council will conduct 15 budget hearings at various times and locations throughout the city.  The public meeting schedule is also posted on the city’s webpage at: http://phoenix.gov/BUDGET/index.html   At these hearings, residents will have the opportunity to make comments or suggestions on the budget proposals.

Please keep an eye on the city’s budget webpage for the latest information on the budget process.

REMINDER TO SHOP PHOENIX!
Anytime you buy merchandise in Phoenix, the sales tax goes directly into the city's General Fund. This fund provides the basic services you receive every day, whether you live in Phoenix or another city. It pays for the city streets, supports the Police and Fire departments and provides the city parks and public transportation.  When you shop in other cities, the tax goes to the general funds of those communities and supports their city services.

To ensure that your sales tax dollars support your city services, shop Phoenix.
